- summing up, as knowledge increases, our power to do evil also increased. In order to make good use  of our knowledge, we would require more and more wisdom. We need more wisdom to make good use of our increasing knowledge. Only then can we realize our purpose of life, and achieve our aims.

3. The author has dealt with a controversial debate on human history. Why do you think history has been a major contested issue in the present world?

 

Ans:-  A controversial issue is the one which results in dispute and disagreement due to a different opinion. The issue on human history is also a controversial issue since almost all people regard their history is the most ancient and the most important of all. There is not a measuring rod to identify which civilization or religion is the oldest and the most important. Researchers try to trace the origin of every civilization on the basis of holy scriptures and fossils of ancient things. Most of the historians and researchers are biased because they try to justify their religion and civilization is the oldest one. They have prejudices and inclination towards their own religion and civilization. Most of the people don't like to see their religion and civilization inferior to another. That's why, even in the present time, it is the major contested issue.

 

4. Sketch the character of Famous Actress.

 

-The Famous Actress is one of the major characters of the play. She is in love with the Earnest Woman’s husband. She weaves a tale about how it is a cleverly staged act in which the man is attempting to trick his wife to get more affection from her. When she finally convinces the Ernest Woman that the story is true, we find out that the husband was hiding in the closet the whole time.

 

5. Shed light on the difference between an ordinary woman and an actress.

 

-An ordinary woman seems to be devoted to her husband. When she comes to know that her husband is in love with an actress, she goes to the actress to give her husband back. She is simple and having no idea about make-up, dresses and lines of the author. She is easily convinced with the false story woven by the actress. On the contrary, the actress is a shrewd woman. She along with the lawyer cheats the woman. She seems to convince the ordinary woman that it is nothing but an illusion.

- Emily Dickinson's "A Day" poem is a lyrical poem that describes sunset and dawns which is compared to life. Which means A day referring to life. The speaker of the poem is confidently describing how the sun rises, the situation of the sun rises, and the setting of the sun. -Laxminarayan is the main character of the play and a Forty years old legal officer and king’s bull’s doctor. Taking the scenario of his relationship with his wives, he has seven wives. Yet he is not satisfied with all of them and he is planning to marry his eighth wife. He calls his wives with different nicknames. This practice of having more wives shows about the male dominant society. Men’s are allowed to marry multiple wives whereas women’s are compelled to live their life under the full dominance and violence of their husband. Women’s were illiterate and unconscious about their rights. People and especially women’s are deprived of political and financial knowledge. Child marriage was prevalent at that time. The society was reliant under male supremacy.



But the Nepalese society has altered this situation dramatically since then. The current situation of Nepali society and especially Nepali women is significantly better. Human rights and women rights are there to protect them with their basic rights. The literacy rate of women has also increased substantially. They were in a higher power of economic and political authority. The concept of equality and equity is operational in Nepalese society. Many of the patriarchal traditions like child marriage and prathas are at the end. Many organizations are working for the betterment of women. Overall the society is significantly changed.

- I feel the famous Actress is really good at acting when she tells the Earnest Young Woman that her husband is playing a game upon her to make her jealous so that she will hair, which the Earnest Young Woman brings with her. She says Alfred has that because her hair-dresser may steal and give it to him.

-The narrator helps Runtu by giving him different types of household items that make his life a bit easier; such as two long tables, an incense burner, some candlesticks, and a set of scales and also for the ashes from our kitchen stove.

-Monsieur Durand dies by committing suicide. To help his daughters with the amount of money from the insurance policy, he drinks poison and sets his house on fire at the end of the play.

-The speaker says that she freed herself from the trunks of the trees that trapped her, and moved away from everything she was taught. Also, she moved away from the castrating horizon. She began to feel intimate liberation with the kiss of the new paths. It is a new balance in her life, and her truth.

d. How does Laxminarayan outsmart Rana Bahadur?

Laxminarayan outsmarts Rana Bahadur with his great trickery. Laxminarayan is 40 years old, one of the legal officers and doctor of the king’s bull. As Gore and Jitman inform him about the death of the king’s bull, he rushes to the king’s palace. He has the amazing talent of flattering the king away from his emotion. He knew king will be angry and enraged by the death of bull, so Laxminarayan didn’t inform immediately. Rather than telling the truth immediately, he tells the bull about the bull’s sickness to the king. He even tells cowherds to massage and wave fans at the bull. By this action the king believes the bull died due to sickness despite excellent care and treatment. It helps to protect the lives of cowherds. This way Laxminarayan flattered the king and protected the life of his and cowherds from the king’s severe punishment.

c. What is the speaker like? Is he a rebel? Why? Why not?

The poet finds the society in complete disorder. People are suffering from poverty, hunger and corruption. He sees homeless children who cry with hunger. He witnesses people ignoring the history. They are treating one another inhumanely. He seems to challenge all these things. Though he is like a rebel, his rebellious nature is not directly presented in the poem.

Monsieur Durand is a pension owner, former railroad worker and widower who lives with his three unkind daughters. He is a loving, caring and protective father. He sacrifices his own life for the sake of the betterment of his daughters who despise(hate) him. He keeps quiet throughout his life bearing injustice from his late wife who put all the blames of financial ruin on him. He is a loving husband too. He is a patriotic person who loves his birth country, France too although he is obliged to live in Switzerland. He is a tragic hero who faces the financial hardships and ends his own life tragically.



g. Discuss "Facing Death" as a modern tragedy.

Tragedy is a kind of drama that ends with death, separation, destruction, tears or failure of the protagonist. This play is a tragedy because it ends with the tragic death of the hero Durand. Modern tragedy deals with the realistic representation and common problems. Realism and naturalism are the main features of the modern play.


Modern tragedies deal with the problems of a modern man such as dysfunctional family relationship, socio-cultural problems, loneliness, etc. Characters become the victim of their socio-cultural environment, fate, economic class, gender, external environment and so on. Hence, in this play too, the protagonist has a dysfunctional relationship with his family members. He is an ordinary man and it deals with the financial hardship of a modern man. It realistically represents the modern world. Hence, it is a modern tragedy.

The essay deals with the significance of exploring the library. When the essayist was a child, his favorite room at home was the library. Books and his library are among his first memories. He disliked school. He gave a deaf ear to learning in the classroom. For him, library was the best place to learn what he wanted. At the library, he was free to choose the books, and to enjoy the special atmosphere and the silent companionship of other readers. When he was at the library he was the master of his own time and mind. He found the living substance of learning without the ill-fitting structure of schooling. Thus, the proverb 'nothing is pleasanter than exploring a library.' applies in the essay.

As human knowledge becomes more specialized, one who is engrossed in the study of his specific field may fail to predict the outcome of the knowledge he is pursuing. Knowledge should be combined with the total needs of mankind. Even complete knowledge is not enough. It should be associated with certain awareness of the ends of human life. The study of history can prove it. For example, Hegel wrote with great knowledge about history, but made the Germans believe that they were a master race. It led to war. It is necessary therefore to combine knowledge with feelings. The men who have knowledge and have no feelings lack wisdom.
